Yo! GeN here!
I recommend you guys to watch The iDOLM@STER anime. I've got a friend watching it and he's a gundam and kamen rider nut and he detests all things cutesy and moe. He's seen a bit of Idolmaster Xenoglossia, which is a spin off anime with mecha and he said it was horrible and insulting (which i wholehearted agree too). But somehow, my recent fandom of Idolm@ster got him curious and decided to watch the subs for it. I can say that he still isn't into the whole virtual idol thing, but admits on how surprisingly good the anime is. he even picked out his favorite idol XD
About the anime, It's a loose adaptation of The iDOLM@STER 2 (XBOX360/PS3). The story revolves around the idol group 765 Pro (765 is pronounced 'Namuko', which is a pun for Namco, the publisher of the IM@S games). It's about their trials and tribulations of being the an idol. By the help of Producer-san (the protagonist from the games), he helps these 13 girls to reach the level of Top Idol stardom. The iDOLM@STER is a 25 episode series and with an extra 26th episode OVA from the home release version. This anime is produced by A-1 Pictures, the same doods behind Blue Exorcist and the Fairy Tail anime.
To end this, you will find something to like about this anime. Whether is it's the character development and story, the insert songs from the games or the tongue in cheek comedy. This slice-of-life anime gives you an interesting peek into the competitive world of Japanese idols.
